Uncover the 2-Stroke Model Airplane Engine
Ever wondered how that little motor on the front of your model airplane delivers such amazing power?
Model airplane engines come in many shapes and sizes from many manufacturers. By far the most common for the moment is the 2-stroke 'glow' engine though the modern electric motor is making rapid inroads.
The 2-stroke model airplane engine is an internal combustion engine burning 'glow' or 'nitro' fuel consisting mostly of alcohol with nitromethane to help combustion and castor oil for lubrication of the metal parts. There are also 4-stroke glow engines that work on the 4-stroke principle. While these two types of model airplane engine produce the same result, and use the same fuel, they accomplish this goal in very different ways and have different characteristics. For the moment we're just going to consider the 2-stroke engine.
RC model airplane engines working on a two stroke principle means that there is fuel ignition on every second stroke of the piston in the cylinder. When the piston is on its down stroke down the cylinder, fuel and air will enter the combustion chamber between the top of the piston and the cylinder head. When the piston reaches the bottom of its stroke and starts to rise again it then compresses the fuel/air mixture in the rapidly shrinking volume of the combustion chamber. The fuel/air mixture is ignited by the glow plug just as the piston reaches the end of it's upstroke. The glow plug is so called because it contains a platinum wire that continues to glow from the heat of the last fuel ignition. The new explosion forces the piston back into the next down stroke.
This sounds very simple but the clever part is that the upper, combustion chamber part of the cylinder above the piston and the lower crankcase below the piston are connected not only by the cylinder bore but also by a transfer port which enables gases to move from the crankcase to the combustion chamber. By careful design, the inlet valve for taking in fresh fuel/air mixture, the exhaust valve for expulsion of exhaust gases and the transfer port which allows movement of the fuel/air mixture from the crankcase to the combustion chamber are always open or closed at the right time by the wall of the piston as it travels up and down the cylinder bore.
The down stroke is created by the rapid expansion of the exhaust gases after the fuel/air mixture ignites. Both the exhaust port and the transfer port are opened as the piston descends in the cylinder bore while the fuel/air inlet is closed. The downward movement of the piston now compresses the fuel/air mixture drawn into the crankcase on the previous upstroke which now rushes up the transfer port into the combustion chamber and helps force out the exhaust gases from that space - and the cycle begins again.
As the speed of this cycle increases, the power output of your RC model airplane engine is increased. Due to it's simplicity the 2-stroke engine can operate to high RPM and high power outputs. Unfortunately, this also means high noise levels.
The 2-stroke engine in all it's forms is a very elegant engineering solution. The piston takes the place of 3 mechanical valves, a timing mechanism and a fuel pump - thereby keeping the weight down and reliability up. In addition, the glow plug combustion method allows the battery to be removed after starting thereby dramatically reducing the weight so it is easy to see why the glow 2-stroke has been so popular for so long.
The 2-stroke glow engine is only one of a number of choices you can make for your model airplane engine. Where outright power and speed are the primary requirement it has little competition and the simplicity and high volume production has led to highly reliable and cost effective engines being developed. Noise is really the only negative consideration.
So for your next project balance the cost, maintenance, exhaust noise level, and weight in order to choose the right sort of model airplane engine for your project.

Reviewsneat looking large toy grade RC ship by GROG from Cape Fear on 2009-07-06 I purchased one of these from another vender sometime ago. I was pleased by the level of detail. It is more toy like than the HT torpedo boat and Destroyer RC boats out there, but it still has impressive detail for a toy considering the size of the ship it appears to be modeled after. Some of the finer details break off easily but this does not affect the function of the boat. It looks very much like a Russian Kiev Class aircraft carrier ( or "aviation cruiser") in approximately 1/350 scale. After having it for a while I disassembled it and painted more to scale, it looks great as is, but with a nice semi-scale paint job it is even better.I have lake tested this boat . It seems to list to the side with the super structure. After running in a pond I added some ballast to compensate. One thing to note: the battery is more difficult to get to than other similar boats. Hooking up the provided charger it is easy but using another faster charger or changing out the battery is not so easy.It has a neat safety feature: the motors will not run unless the boat is in the water or with some other form of conductor touching both propeller shafts. The information on the box is not real clear about this feature. For about $50.00 with shipping it is a pretty good buy, has excellent looks and good perfromance for a toy grade RC model (do not expect hobbie RC perfromance from a $50.00 toy). If you want long distance range, Long operating time, with scale speeds you are going to have to spend much more than the $50.00 or so that this unit costs. For something smaller and cheaper the RC Warship Electric Boat with Battery and Charger, torpedo boat from Hobbytron is also very nice. Also the "Smasher" Destroyer modeled after a Russian Sovremenny Class DDG in 1/200 scale is very nice and priced similarly.

ReviewsGreat beginner plane by Lorie Dempewolf from on 2010-08-18 They battery life was not very good but I liked flying it. You need now wind to fly it, will just crash. When there was now wind it flow so well. I had a few crashs nose first witch bent the nose in word i puled it out and put some fome in there and put the nose back on and fly's better. If you crack it just use some tape it will still fly fine. It is a great beginner plane.
Total wate of money by Michael P. Cherenzia from on 2010-03-05 First of all, this plane will not fly in any wind whatsoever! Which really means indoor plane. I have seen this plane described as indestructible-what a joke!! I tried flying this plane outside with no wind and still no success. After three flight attempts the main wing was in two pieces. I have repaired the plane, but will not waste any more of my time trying to fly it! Much smarter to put your money towards a higher quality trainer. But, if you really must have this thing, mine is for sale "cheap"!!! Here's my number: 701 426 6289
This plane is garbage by Jason Lewis from NJ on 2010-03-01 This aircraft is both cheap and not worth the money. When it arrived the package was torn and the wings were damaged from the seller. The landing gear is so flimsy that it can barely leave the ground. The very first flight the black nose cone broke off and the left prop fell off the wing, from a simple landing. When you can get it to actually fly the battery only lasts about 10 minutes.
This is an extremely cheap made aircraft and i will never order another one again, after this I'm going to stick to flying helicopters... I was that dissappointed in this piece of junk.
Sooper Blooper by Robert E. McElroy from Niceville, FL on 2010-02-12 What a total disappointment. It is so true, you get what you pay for. If the total cost of the plane with S&H was $20.00 I could see, but no, I paid $32.60. Virtually Indestructible was used to describe this plane. What exactly does "Virtually" mean. The nose on the A/C bent up on the first flight with a fairly easy landing. By the end of the third flight the little black nose tip and the entire front end were a crushed mass of bend up strudy foam. And get this... The solid foam construction, well this gave way and the electronics pack w/ the battery were up in the front of the A/C as well. And to beat all the horizontal Stab broke.
I know, I know, you're thinking yeah right... I have been flying RC a/C for years. I was going to introduce my son to an A/C he might be able to handle. Heck, his father couldn't! The first flight was a beautiful long graceful flight. Perfect landing. The next two attempts, the plane never got ten feet off the ground before winging over into the ground. No, Not pilot error! The A/C was trashed out in less than 10 minutes. Oh, and the battery, what a joke! We got one flight. Less than ten minutes. Needless to say...Do not waste your time or money on this product. It is a let down. Bought mine at [...] Don't make the mistake I did...
BAD by Christine R. Carroll from on 2010-01-27 THIS PLANE WHEN I BOUGHT IT WOULD NOT CHARGE I WOULD CHANGE WHAT I THOUGHT IF THE MANUAL SAID A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE CHARGING .iT SAYS BARLEY ANYTHING ABOUT CHARGING IT

ReviewsWat are u people talking about? by ANDREW from on 2010-07-23 What are u people talking about? mine always crashes, never breaks, first helicopter i ever flew, and guess what? even I can get to not spin, adjust the knob to the right adjustment, if it changes, use the right control stick to oppose the spin, its not THAT HARD
only problem was one of the little wheels broke off, what is wrong wit u people?
Terrible junk by kkbob33 from on 2010-07-16 I have flown RC helicopters in the past but his one would just spin and spin. could not get it to fly straight at all even with the R/L knob. The right analog stick was somewhat tilted right which may have had something to do with it. I gave the the thing to my dad. He likes to take things apart to see how they work. Would not recommend. get something better.
Horrible! by Corinne L. Mattli from on 2010-05-13 I'll keep this short. The helicopter never worked properly for me. It spun horribly regardless of trim adjustments or controls, then WITHOUT CRASHING the top rotor stopped spinning and it failed completely. I tried the easy fixes suggested some places, but the problem is clearly internal.I know cheap choppers are usually short lived and low quality, but they should at least work.Do not buy.
comparable to 70 dollar models by Tyler Shore from Florida on 2010-04-06 I used to have a micro mosquito helicopter from radio shack. they're about the same size although very different visually, but fly with the same amount of control and of course cower at the drafts of AC vents.
these aren't easy to control, to say the very least. But watching the heli actually move forward and backward and left and right as you intended feels really rewarding.pros:
durable enough. dozens of crashes and no damage yet. just don't be an idiot pilot
the little blinking light on the tip was a nice surprise
the style actually looks pretty coolcons:
charge time is 15 minutes and the fly time is definitely less
didn't come with an ac adapter, as the seller said it would
charges with the remote. wtf?
not really a con, but takes 6 batteries in the remote, not 8. another seller description faultI'm having a good time. the thing was only like 30 bucks. well worth the price
Do not Buy by K. Bohle from on 2010-02-12 This toy was a gift and would not charge or function.
Would not reccomend this shipper or product.

ReviewsGREAT model of TITANIC!!! by Peter R. Hodges from Santa Barbara, CA on 2008-07-17 [[ASIN:B0006N6OUG 1/400 RMS Titanic]
This TITANIC kit is far and away the most detailed kit in this scale ever produced... It out-classes the old Minicraft 1/350 kit in at least one important area: the superstructure sides are molded entirely in white plastic in the area which is intended to be painted white, making the model far easier to paint without obliterating detail. The fact that the superstructure sides are separate pieces also eliminates the alignment problems associated with the old Minicraft kit, such as the aft C-Deck square windows and the two well-deck areas. If one decides to cut out additional windows, particularly in the aft area of starboard B-Deck (location of Cafe Parisien) where the window pattern is incorrectly a "mirror image" of the port side (A'La Carte Restaurant) where it is correct, this is easy to do because the superstructure side is a separate section. If one wishes to model the TITANIC's sister-ships OLYMPIC or BRITANNIC in terms of window placement, having the sides as separate also makes this option far easier. The detail is crisp, without flash (excess plastic) and without sink-marks or mold lines. The masts and spars are made flexible enough not to break when handling, and the rigging plan is easy to follow. A "purist" might balk at the fact that two of the collapsible lifeboats are missing from the kit, but these can easily be made from scratchbuild plastic stock... The high level of accuracy and detail elsewhere on the kit make the two missing boats a "non-issue". There are a number of brass photo-etch aftermarket products made just for this kit in 1/400-scale, which can be used to super-detail this model. Not enough good things can be said about this TITANIC kit... Pete Hodges

ReviewsR/C Police boat by Stefan from on 2010-08-10 Bought this R/C Police boat for my 6 (almost 7) year old son to use in our brook out back and he loves it! It has dual motors for forward, reverse, and left right. Having reverse is great as when he was learning the controls at times he would be heading for the bank and not have enough room to turn - so reverse was needed. The boat is a good size so it can handle small wind ripples on ponds and such. Battery life is good we are happy with that, the light on the boat makes it fun to play with at dusk.

Reviewswarship by el capitan from on 2010-06-28 Bought this as a gift to a family of three boys. The toy performs better than expected, moves rapidly and with assurance through the waters of a large community pool. The problem was that the boys ages 2,5 and 8 took the controller into the pool and shorted out the box. I had given this as a gift hence I did not have the instruction booklet and didn't know what to do when it got dipped in the pool. Also, certain parts (plastic) were clipped onto the frame, they needed to be cemented, they popped off during the trial run. Overall, was satisfied, the price was right, just need to find another control unit

ReviewsTitanic Undertaking! by D. J. Grover from on 2009-11-20 This model is breathtaking when completed, and truly is "museum quality". Due to it's intricate detail though, it's construction should be left to only the most experienced (and patient) modeling enthusiasts. I bought this for my dad, who has been building ship and plane models for over 50 years.... many of them very difficult to build. He said that this one was one of the most challenging he has built. If you are a highly skilled hobbyist that is looking for a challenge, you might consider this one. When finished. the reward is well worth the work. Absolutely stunning replica!
Great model- lousy instructions by Stanwyck from Texas on 2009-04-05 Putting this model together is an absolute pain- the instructions are terrible and somewhat confusing. You are better off cutting out the pictures from the box and then fitting and painting the parts as you see them. Many of the parts require considerable filing before they will fit properly, and a number of the larger pieces are warped- not seriously- but enough that you had better have a large supply of rubber bands or clamps handy to hold them into place while the glue dries.Otherwise, a very nice model when complete.
The TITANIC, The ship of dreams. by Commander Barcarra from Somewhere on Hoth on 2006-06-01 Now, I know a lot of my reviews are on Star Wars. But I am also a historian. I am a Titanic Efficiando. I can answer any question at any time between 9am-11pm June 6-August 31. And I'm still only just about to finish 7th Grade. This has to be the best detailed model of the R.M.S. Titanic I've seen (other than the 20 foot long model with the TITANIC Exhibition.) I Give it 5 stars all the way.

ReviewsExcellent first Copter by Rene S. Hoepelman Jr. from Cary, NC on 2010-08-07 I used to fly RC planes several years ago with alot of bad luck and disapointment, so I was kinda hesitant to try out helicopters. This is my first RC helicopter and Im hooked. Helicopters appear more complicated to fly than they really are, but I find it easier than planes because you can hover to regain control back if necessary. With that being said, a hover cant save you, if your not careful. The gyro system works to keep the craft stable, but cant recover from too much over correction. You have to finesse the controls in small increments. You wont be disappointed if this is your first copter. At this price, you'd expect to get a decent indoor mini. The 9074 is about twice the size of a mini. It works indoors with alot of open space and outdoors with very little to no wind. No wind being ideal. Has LED light on the top rotor looks awsome at night.
Metal helicopter by S. Benson from FENTON, MO, US on 2010-06-16 My husband & son both love this helicopter, it does not take long to charge and is ready to go in no time. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a small but fun helicopter.
